Division Games........... Before the Worksheets

11's:

Your child should know their 11's (multiplication facts). It is vital that they know these multiplication facts because they will be a huge help in division.

First, practice reading multiplication / division problems and rewrite them into a division problem. So, 9 x 11 = 99 can become 99 / 11 = 9.

There are several strategies for solving any division problems with the divisor of 11:

The best way to explain is to show an example.

Look at: 88 / 11 .......Here are some ways to solve this problem:

(1). Look at the Divisor : Recognize that 11 is the divisor, what multiplied by 11 equals 88?

(2). Skip Counting: I might skip count and realize that I have to skip count 8 times to get to 88.

(3). Remember a Strategy: I know 11's are easy. 11 copies things , so when I multiply a number by eleven that number gets copied. 11x8=88 (this only works for when I multiply 11 by a single digit). Since I know this strategy I can work backward, then get rid of one of the copies of 8 and I end up with 8. So 88 / 11 = 8.

Crazy Math Mom Tip:
Play simple division games with 12. At the grocery store, find the 12 packs doughnuts in the bakery and count by 12's, then take the total and divide it by 12. Figure out how many months you have been alive. How old is your child? A year is 12 months so you can skip count until you get to the age you are looking for. How old are you? How many months have you been alive? How about your animals, other friends, etc?

12's

Your child should know their 12's (multiplication facts). It is vital that they know these multiplication facts because they will be a huge help in division.

First, practice reading multiplication / division problems and rewrite them into a division problem. So, 6 x 12 = 72 becomes 72 / 12 = 6.

There are several strategies for solving any division problems with the divisor of 12:

The best way to explain is to show an example.

(1). Look at the Divisor: By looking at the divisor you know this is a 12 fact.

(2). Skip Counting : I might skip count and realize that I have to skip count by 12's- 4 times to get to 48.

Here is the 12 skip counting song:

Skip counting by 12's song, tune of : "My Darling Clementine"
12,24,36 (Oh my darling, Oh my darling)
48 and 69 (Oh my darling, Clementine)
72, 84, 96 (you are gone and lost forever )
96 my Clementine! (Oh my darling Clementine)

(3). Guess and Check: Since 48 is fairly close to 12 I might start by doubling 12- 12 + 12 = 24, I know another 12 won't get me there so I add another 12 + 12 = 24, which leaves me with two 24's: 24 + 24 = 48, (Doubles plus Doubles strategy),so 48 / 12 = 4.

(4). : I can round 12 down to 10 (friendly number), I know that it would take 4 tens to get to 48, so I try 12x4 and get 48.
